GuRu is packed with more than 80 beautiful photographs that illustrate the concept of building the life you want from the outside in and the inside out. "You’re born naked and the rest is drag." As someone who has deconstructed life’s hilarious facade, RuPaul has broken "the fourth wall" to expand on the concept of mind, body, and spirit. This unique perspective has allowed RuPaul to break the shackles of self-imposed limitations, but reader beware, this is a daily practice that requires diligence and touchstones to keep you walking in the sunshine of the spirit. Once you’re willing to look beyond the identity that was given to you, a hidden world of possibilities will open its doors. Throughout the history of humans on this planet, there’ve always been shaman, seers, and mediums who are able to interpret both high and low frequencies and remind humans to look beyond the surface for the truth of who we really are. And who we really are is an extension of the power that created the universe (aka: God in drag). FYI: most people are not willing to hear or accept that. That is RuPaul’s secret for success, not only in show business, but in all aspects of life, especially in navigating the emotional landmines that inhibit most sweet, sensitive souls. If you think this book is just about "doing drag," you are sorely mistaken because for RuPaul, drag is merely a device to deactivate the identity-based ego and allow space for the unlimited.

The audio book was adorable. Hearing Ru laugh and the emotion behind the stories was well worth the listen. They referenced the photos in the book, which I have ordered a copy of, and I can't wait to see them. I highly suggest getting both to get the full experience. The tales and advice given are great and worth hearing.

Uplifting. Inspiring. FABULOUS. I am seriously considering using this as daily meditation/devotional focusing on self care and self worth.

Most of the books I have read until now have been by straight white upper middle class American males about other straight white upper middle class American males. Occasionally I'll deviate by one or two descriptors such as straight black poor American males or straight white upper middle class American female but the point is my views are limited by what I read. While there are of course many different perspectives within that group (of which I am a part) and its ilk I figured it's probably best to branch out a little. So, with 5 minutes before I boarded a 7 hour flight home, I went through the google book store on my phone to see if I could find something a little different. Lucky me that GuRu by Mr. RuPaul Charles awaited me as one of the first books available. it's not quite the poor lesbian Australian aboriginal at one with nature that I imagine I should be reading but it would have to do for the flight. I forked over my $11 to the almighty google machine with the hope that I get into the life of America's premier drag queen and his exploits. Perhaps I was naive to think that this would be a deep look into Mr. RuPaul himself, but regardless I was very disappointed. For starters, the book is, when you remove all the photos and bad formatting, maybe between 2,000-3,000 words. it's basically a long magazine article which goes about a paragraph deep into a dozen random topics. to put it bluntly, it felt like when high schoolers have to meet page length requirements so they pad the margins and increase the font size of the punctuation to reach an acceptable length. there's so little actual writing it's infuriating. As I imagine it, some editor asked him to write "the next big self help book" but he didn't have time so instead of postponing or canceling the project he handed over a few days of journal entries about advice and the book editor pulled this together somehow. It jumps from photos of himself to weirdly bold quotes to short paragraphs about topics that have nothing to do with one another (I suspect that reading on a phone formatted it poorly). There's a nugget of wisdom here and there but overall it's a weird stream of consciousness from RuPaul about how to live your life. It's like walking into a gift shop that only carries items with either drag queen photos or bad self help quotes from the last 10 years. This isn't to say that there aren't moments of real human interest. I'm sure a fully fleshed out biography of him or extended interview would be interesting. There are some things in there that I would love to hear him expand on, including "As drag queens, it's our job to mock the hypocrisy, mediocrity, and absurdity of society", when he mentions how his notions of gender were formed, or about his ideas on how to educate young people. he has a lot of wisdom, but this book does not say it well. I have a lot of respect for RuPaul and everything he's done but he can do better than this.

I don’t like self-help books. Most of what I see could have been taken care of in a small pamphlet. However. When I can combine Glamazon photos of the Queen Mama herself with thoughts about taking care of yourself, I’m in. Perhaps I’ll pick a page a day and see how I can incorporate the ideals. Regardless, I’ve got fabulous images of just how to wear a lace front.

"IF YOU WANT TO BE INVITED TO THE PARTY, YOU MUST HAVE SOMETHING TO BRING." He means chips and dip right? Cause that's what this girl brings to the party. Lol! Listening to this book of little nuggets of wisdom read by RuPaul was a delight. There were several sayings that I want to write down and return back to because they were really wise and thoughtful. Or this: QUICK REMINDER: HAVING A FAT ASS IS A GOOD THING. Thank you Rupaul for making me laugh, and making me think. I listened to the audiobook which of course featured excellent narration from the author but I did feel like I was missing out on the photos so I picked up an ebook version from my library and flipped pages as I listened. I think the two together give the best experience and I'm not quite sure a pdf of the images wasn't included with the audiobook.

Uplifting and beautiful. I found this reading to be both quick and slow at once. Fast-paced due to fairly small pieces of text, slow due to the small pieces of text left me lost in thought.

With other audiobooks I've read that heavily reference photos that are featured in the hardcover/paperback/e-book version, there will generally be a downloadable pdf file that comes with the audiobook - which I think is a good way to go about including the material, rather than having to buy a whole different extra copy of the same book in a different format. Because of that, you might feel like you're missing out on some things if you only have the audiobook. With that said, if I *had* gotten a physical copy of this book I would have a hard time finding the right place for it on my bookshelf...Of course, I would want to shelve it with my other RuPaul books (in the cross-over area of memoir and lgbtq), but if we're talking in terms of content I think it would fit well right next to Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

Figuratively speaking, "GuRu" is a coloring book. — RuPaul provides the scaffolding of a self-help book by sharing what works for him (i.e. meditation / self respect / love) in filling his own life with color, asks readers to use every last color in their own 96 pack of crayolas to make their own lives more radiant, and tells them not to worry about any societal expectations that we stay within certain lines. — Literally speaking, you may be disappointed with "GuRu" if you just want a coloring b Figuratively speaking, "GuRu" is a coloring book. — Literally speaking, you may be disappointed with "GuRu" if you just want a coloring book. — Here's the list of "Must Read Books" as suggested by Mentor-Ru in the end notes of "GuRu": A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson Toxic Parents by Dr. Susan Forward The Velvet Rage by Alan Downs A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle My Life So Far by Jane Fonda Magical Thinking by Augusten Burroughs Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

“You’re born naked and the rest is drag,” is a saying RuPaul has made more than once and in thus beautifully pictured guide, he shares himself and his journey with readers with a fierceness that only RuPaul can deliver. One of the things I enjoyed most were the quotes. I list my favorites here: - Happiness is wanting what you already have. - Know who you are and deliver it all times. - Consciousness is so sexy. - Quick reminder: Instead of constantly pointing out what’s missing celebrate what is. “You’re born naked and the rest is drag,” is a saying RuPaul has made more than once and in thus beautifully pictured guide, he shares himself and his journey with readers with a fierceness that only RuPaul can deliver. I bought this book from Premier Collectibles through a Facebook ad. lol They had autographed copies so I thought, why not? It turned out to be a photobook, not an autobiography like I thought. At the end is a list of Rupaul's recommended reads, listens, and watches. This book wasn't what I was expecting. It's a very quick read but the pictures are worth ogling so I would recommend it mostly for people who love the looks but aren't in it for a biographical story. The little bits of texts on each page are pretty uplifting and self-affirming, though, so all in all it's a feel-good book I enjoyed reading with pictures I enjoyed admiring.

I’ll be honest: I needed this book. I’ve been struggling a lot lately with the negativity of our environment right now, and I knew Ru’s other books talked about his past, and his work ethic, etc, so I was expecting more of that. Instead, I found this art book, with big glam photos and really only snippets of text, and thought, oh ok this is a candy-style fan thing. Mr. Charles, I needed this so much right now. In fact, I may read it a few more times and see what it does to my spirits - and my confidence in who I am. Now, you have to like RuPaul and get the irreverence of the drag aesthetic, but I did not expect something with such a dark, yet uplifting, tone. If you’re feeling down, maybe you need some RuTherapy! (And, yes, you're best getting a print copy because the photos are part of the experience.)

I don't watch RuPaul's Drag Race only because that's not my style of reality show as far as I know; if someone tells me that it's less drama llama like every other American reality TV show and more Great British Bake-Off wholesomeness, I might be persuaded otherwise. Quick read, at least, I just wish there had been more of RuPaul's story.

I bought this when I saw that Foyles was selling signed copies and couldn’t resist myself. I whizzed through this really quickly, because where I thought this was a biography, it’s more a collection of inspiring little notes and messages, which was kind of disappointing, especially considering that it’s basically exactly the same as Ru’s other book I read last year. Still, it’s very Ru, and there are some great pictures in here that really benefit from this being made of glossy photo paper. Anyway, I liked this, but it didn’t hold my attention for very long, I think I just really want a RuPaul biography, but these kind of books will have to do for now.
